Strippers getting mad at pole dancers part 3748 of an unlimited series

Why hate tho? Strippers is athletes too.

We’re hating bc the dead stripper at the bachelor party is a joke used in more than a handful of tv shows and movies, cuz friends thought it would be funny to accuse the stripper of stealing, cuz Chris rock jokes about keeping his daughter off the pole and there are jokes about don’t name your daughter Bambi if you don’t want her to know her way around a pole.
We hate cuz these girls separate themselves from strippers by declaring us talentless, by reassuring themselves and potential audiences that they don’t have daddy issues like we do, they weren’t abused like we were, that they’re artists and we are dumb sluts who shuffle around a pole.We hate because they do pole dancing for a hobby, sanitizing it through the above mechanisms, while we lose jobs, children, admittance to university, and family members for the way we pay rent.
We hate because police joke during raids that if you rape a sex worker, is it rape or theft?
We hate because if we’re assaulted, we can’t go to the cops and know we’ll be taken seriously, let alone get fair treatment.
But go on, talk about how it’s all equal and it’s all sporting.

Wow, that’s kind of stupid. hating people because they decided they wanted to learn how pole dance for a hobby. Because pole dancing is only to be okay if it’s done by a stripper anyone else do it and they’re wrong? This is just as dumb as saying white people can’t rap because they aren’t black.

Babe what’s up with your reading comprehension? Reread until you understand what I said and get back to me, til then, be neither seen, nor heard. Opinions are only worth the information behind them: yours is worthless.

I can’t believe this is getting reblogs again. The gr8 pole deb8 is deathless.

I don’t get it … Maybe I’m being dense but I do pole dance because it’s fun and good for fitness. Never once have I thought about strippers being less than me or less able or whatever. I think stripping takes guts and I hate jokes about sex workers like the ones above. But why am I dumb for paying something I consider a fitness class (and yes I’m aware I look ridiculous) and why do you hate me for tasteless jokes that i don’t make and don’t find funny :s if anyone can explain (with out just insulting me or something) then please do!

Aw your URL is really cute and little. Ok.Because pole work is something strippers invented and popularised (i am aware of the arguments about mallakhamb and the Chinese sport but they don’t hold water on closet examination and honestly reek of white people trying to spiritual wash their appropriation of another oppressed population’s product and disguise it as an ancient eastern sport that strippers misappropriated and that middle class pole dancers are now restoring to it’s true form which is gross all on it’s own without the whorephobia and class stigma)Because, as I say, it’s something popularised by an extremely stigmatised and marginalised population, middle class women tend to take up the hobby while trying to separate themselves from strippers through the aforementioned spiritual-washing, or by emphatically repeating that “they aren’t strippers, they have SKILL.”Is this making sense?I have YET to see one pole hobbyist talk about how someone confused them with a stripper and they just politely said that they were not, without getting angry and shrill and talking about how strippers are dumb sluts with daddy issues and it is SO UNFAIR they work SO HARD on their pole dancing and POLE ISN’T SEXUAL WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP ACTING LIKE ITS SEXUAL?!!!(For one thing because when strippers do pole work it looks a lot better. It just does. It’s a hot form and anaesthetising it and sanitising it and doing it barefoot in sports clothes doesn’t really do anything for it)I have a list of helpful suggestions for times like that that I can copy and paste for you.So that’s why we’re angry about this. Maybe you don’t do this but I have a tag full of women who do and the thousands of people who support them.

Tldr the hobby that so many women latch on to as both transgressive and edgy and yet “not sexy, not like those skanky strippers” is a loaded one. It costs us something. Sex work keeps us alive but it stigmatises us and pole hobbyists only contribute to the stigma because it benefits them to draw distinctions. And honestly the normalizing and mainstreaming of the accoutrements of sex work is not fighting stigma. It doesn’t help us. It further lowers the market value of our work and renders invisible the emotional labour at the heart of our work. Especially with the language pole hobbyists use. “Just dumb sluts with daddy issues who schlump around the pole.”I’ve gone from being supportive of amateur pole work to honestly believing they just contribute to our further stigmatization and marginalization, and the deterioration of our incomes. Their mainstreaming of their hobby just renders us more invisible.

Oh man, I work at a night club as a bouncer and so after some of the strippers across the street get off they usually come over and we have become good friends. They tell me ridiculous stories of how customers do ridiculous shit and they belittle them all the time. Even trying to accuse a Russian girl that her accent was fake for the better part of an hour. I feel for you. You have better temperament than I do.

I’m Facebook friends with a stripper in the south who has a PhD, and when I posted a status about the guy last night, she said she rarely has a customer believe her when she tells them she has her PhD.  They often try to “test” her by demanding she describe her dissertation and shit like that.  Which is exactly what the guy last night did to me.  “Oh, you’ve been to India?  Reeeally?  Then what city is the Taj Mahal in?”  Such a gigantic douche.

Because having a phd is such a selling point for sex workers that we’d totally lie about it. Unbelievable.

I get this all the time with guys doubting that I already went to college. I can see lying about being a current student, but why in the world would I lie about having gone to school 3 years ago and 600 miles away?! Why would that be a selling point? It’s absurd.

some helpful reminders about sex workers ♥

If sex workers aren’t selling their bodies, what are they selling?

their time, the sexual experience that they’re having/creating, and the products that they create.

sex workers sell a service. Unless they’re selling their own kidneys on the black market, saying that sex workers sell their bodies makes no sense at all.

How are you a feminist but your a stripper ... that's like saying your tired of PETA contacting you while wearing a 6 thousand dollar fur coat

Try not to think too hard, you might hurt yourself.

:( that’s not even a good analogy on his part.

How does one manage to be a feminist stripper? Idk how does one manage to be a person of colour and also a radical anti-racism activist like sometimes when you’re on the frontlines of a particular oppression you get invested in fighting it. This concept is only hard if you concieve of sex workers as only existing in a sex industry bubble, performing sexiness when men slide the money in and then slowly winding into stasis until the next man comes along to prod us into performance.

We exist outside the club and we have friends, families, eyes to see with and brains to think with. That’s how there are feminist strippers.
